Description | Clam shell hand-carved from wood. MacRae's carvings date primarily to after the 1913 Armory Show. His carved shells were in demand. Letter from Mrs. Robert H. Montgomery, 27 March 1948: “Mr. du Pont was very much interested in your work Brown, he likes the scallop shell and would like for you to make one for him, not quite as long as mine, he would like his about 17" long and better proportioned. In other words he wants it to look more like a scallop shell for he collects shells on the west coast and knows a lot about them.” Letter from Mrs. Rensselaer Bartram Jr., 6 August 1949: “It was with such joy that I opened + read your letter, saying the shell was ready…I am so happy Brown to at last own one of those beautiful shells--I've wanted one for a long time--there is no one in the world you [sic] can make the beautiful things you do--truly a work of Art.--done by a true artist.” Letter from Margo, 11 September 1950: “Talk about museling [sic] in! I knew that if I concentrated hard enough on it, I would somehow convey to the Old House my fierce desire to have one of those priceless carvings!--So I have (very occasionally you understand, but no less ardently!) just quietly kept informing everyone, Ed, Libby and my maker; that I would like a shell from Brown! Now behold, here it is!” Letters from William E. Finch Jr. Archives, Holley/MacRae Papers, Box 13, File 149: correspondence relating to commissions, c. 1904-1950 |
